The Laboratory of Web and Information Technologies (WIT) is part of the Department of Computer & Decision Engineering (CoDE) of the Ecole Polytechnique de Bruxelles (Engineering Faculty). The Laboratory is composed of 3 full-time professors, around 20 researchers and PhD students, and 3 administrative/technical support staff. The Laboratory for Web and Information Technologies (WIT) organizes the International Erasmus Mundus education program in Business Intelligence (IT4BI, http://it4bi.univ-tours.fr/) as well as the Erasmus Mundus joint doctorate program in Business Intelligence (IT4BI-DC, https://it4bi‐dc.ulb.ac.be/), both in tight collaboration with industry.
Professor Esteban Zimányi started his studies at the Universidad Autonoma de Centro America, Costa Rica. He received a B.Sc. (1988) and a doctorate (1992) in computer science from the Faculty of Sciences at the ULB. His current research interests include data warehouses and business intelligence, semantic web and web services, geographic information systems and spatio-temporal databases. He has co-authored and co-edited 8 books and published more than 100 peer‐reviewed papers on these topics. He is Editor‐in‐Chief of the Journal on Data Semantics (JoDS) published by Springer. He is the coordinator of the Erasmus Mundus Master and the Erasmus Mundus Doctorate “Information SeCloud – 105 Technologies for Business Intelligence” (IT4BI). He has served as PC Chair for DOLAP 2009, General Chair for ER 2011, and on numerous program committees, including EDBT, ACM GIS, VLDB, and DaWaK. He is a member of the ER Steering Committee.
Professor Toon Calders obtained his PhD at the University of Antwerp in Belgium in 2003. He recently joined the ULB in 2012 as Chair in Business Intelligence, after working for 6 years at the Eindhoven University of Technology in The Netherlands as an assistant professor in the department of mathematics and computer science. His main research interests are Business Intelligence, Knowledge Discovery in Databases, and fairness in data mining. Toon Calders has a prominent position in the data mining and machine learning community; he is area editor of the Information Systems journal, editorial board member of the Springer Data Mining journal, and guest editor for the Machine Learning journal. He is also program chair for the ECMLPKDD 2014 conference, the leading data mining and machine learning conference in Europe.
Professor Stijn Vansummeren obtained his PhD at Hasselt University/transnational University of Limburg in Belgium in 2005. He joined the ULB in 2009 as Chair in Web Data Management, after a postdoc position of 3 years at the Fund for Scientific Research Flanders. His main research interests are database systems, database theory, and data on the web, including design and implementation of query languages and systems for data on the web; text analytics; and recent datacenter‐scale data analytic systems (in the style of Map/Reduce, Pregel and Dremel). Stijn Vansummeren is editorial member of the Information Systems journal and the Journal on Data Semantics and has served on numerous high‐ranking databases systems, database theory, and data on the web conferences. He has co-organized the International Conference on Conceptual Modeling (ER) in 2011, and co-organizes the joint International Conference on Extending Database Technology and Database Theory in 2015.
